Most students spend days collecting VIT Vellore fees information from scattered sources. After spending a few days, they end up with five different numbers and become confused. They don’t know what they will actually pay after admission.

This article fixes that. It brings all the information together in one place. Every figure comes from VIT’s official website and its published hostel fee documents. Where a figure is estimated or may change, we clearly mention that.

The One Thing You Must Understand First: The Category System

VIT Vellore does not have a single tuition fee. Your fee depends on the “scholarship category” assigned during VITEEE counselling. Your VITEEE rank and the branch you choose mainly determine the category.

There are six categories, numbered 0 to 5:

This system is different from what several older articles describe. The older system had Categories 1 to 5, with Category 1 as the lowest and Category 5 as the highest. However, the official 2026–27 fee tables on VIT’s website show six tiers, with Category 0 at the top. Your category is fixed at the time of admission and applies for all four years, as long as you continue to meet the required academic continuation conditions.

Branch Groups: Which Fee Slab Applies to Your Course?

VIT divides its B.Tech programmes into three groups. Each group has its own fee schedule.

Group A — Lower-demand branches:

VIT Vellore follows a scholarship-category system, with the annual tuition fee depending on both your category and your programme group.

Additional admission-time charge:  A one-time refundable caution deposit of ₹5,000 is collected with the first-year tuition fee at the time of admission.

Hostel and Mess Fees 2025-26

Before looking at the numbers, understand one important point: VIT’s hostel fee already includes mess charges. The official hostel documents show a combined “Room & Mess” fee, so students do not pay separate hostel and mess charges.

VIT Vellore has 32 hostel blocks—21 for men and the remaining blocks for women. Together, they accommodate more than 30,000 residents each year. Room options range from 2-bed to 8-bed sharing, with both AC and Non-AC configurations.

Single-bed rooms (1-bed AC/Non-AC) are available only for PG students in the Deluxe block.

Important: Annual Hostel Fee Escalation

VIT’s official hostel fee document clearly states: “Hostel fee is subject to annual escalation.”

This means you should budget for a 5–10% annual increase in your room and mess charges from Year 2 onwards. Your admission fee and caution deposit (paid only in Year 1) remain unchanged.

The document also specifies the following rules for room and mess changes:

• No refund is provided for room or mess downgrading.
• Mess changes can be made monthly.
• If you upgrade your mess mid-year (fall semester), you pay the full difference in fee.
• An upgrade during the winter semester requires payment of 50% of the difference.

VIT Vellore Fees For 4 Years BTech With Hostel

You don’t get the actual cost if you only look at the first-year fee. This section builds three realistic scenarios so you can see total costs, not just year-one figures.

Scenario 1: CSE student, Category 1, modest hostel (6-bed Non-AC, Veg Mess)

The ₹15,000 caution deposit is refundable when you leave the hostel, so the effective cost is approximately ₹12.64 lakh.

Scenario 2: CSE student, Category 3, mid-range hostel (3-bed AC, Non-Veg Mess)

Scenario 3: CSE student, Category 5, 2-bed AC hostel with Special Mess

Note: These estimates assume a 5% annual hostel fee escalation. The actual increase may vary. The caution deposit refund is not deducted from the totals above.

Scholarships: What You Can Actually Get

GVSDP (GV School Development Programme)

GVSDP is VIT’s primary institutional scholarship and is awarded based on the VITEEE rank. The scholarship applies to tuition fees for all four years. However, you must maintain the required academic performance, which includes a CGPA above 8.0, regular attendance, and no disciplinary issues.

For Class 12 board toppers: VIT also provides fee concessions under the same GVSDP programme for State/Central Board rank holders. The exact benefit depends on the board and rank.

Local scholarship: Students who completed their Class 12 education in Vellore, Ranipet, Tirupattur, or Tiruvannamalai districts may be eligible for an additional ₹10,000 per year under the GVSDP local programme.

STARS Scholarship

The Support the Advancement of Rural Students (STARS) scholarship offers comprehensive financial support for VIT students. The top 10 students from government schools in each Tamil Nadu district can receive a full waiver covering tuition, hostel, and basic medical expenses. To qualify, family income must be below ₹1.5 lakh per year. STARS requires a separate application along with supporting documents.

Government Scholarships

VIT is listed on the National Scholarship Portal. Students from SC/ST backgrounds, OBC candidates, and students from certain northeastern states and Jammu & Kashmir may be eligible for Central or State government scholarship schemes that can cover a significant portion of their fees. The AICTE scholarship for government-school students with family income below ₹8 lakh per year is also applicable.

Costs the Brochure Doesn’t Cover

Personal expenses in Vellore:

Vellore is quite affordable compared to major metro cities. A budget of ₹3,000–₹5,000 per month is reasonable for expenses outside mess food, such as weekend meals, snacks, local travel, stationery, and mobile recharges.

Laundry:

Laundry services are included in the hostel fee. It covers up to 44 washes per academic year. Any extra washes over this limit are charged separately.

Semester-wise payment:

VIT collects the tuition fee each semester—not yearly. This can make cash flow easier, but it also means two fee payment deadlines each year. Missing a payment deadline generally means you cannot register for the next semester.

VITEEE application fee:

₹1,350, inclusive of GST.

Day scholar option:

Students whose families live within 65 km of the VIT Vellore campus can register as day scholars and avoid hostel fees entirely. The 65-km limit is measured from the campus address in Vellore, not the city centre.

Mess upgrades:

Mess upgrades are one-way during the academic year. You can change your mess type monthly, but if you downgrade during the year, you won’t receive a refund. Upgrading in the fall semester costs the full differential fee, and an upgrade in the winter semester requires 50% of the differential.

NRI and Foreign Student Fees

NRI, PIO, and OCI students apply through a separate NRI admission window. For BTech NRI students, the academic fee is charged in US dollars. VIT’s official information lists NRI hostel fees for men starting at approximately $2,290 per year for a 6-bed Non-AC room with Special Mess, and going up to approximately $4,270 per year for a 1-bed AC room with Special Mess. Academic tuition fees for NRI BTech applicants are specified separately in the NRI admission brochure.

For international students (foreign nationals), VIT has a separate foreign student admission window. Their fees follow a similar US-dollar-denominated structure.

Fee Refund Policy

VIT follows the UGC guidelines for fee refunds. If you cancel your seat before classes begin, you are eligible for a full fee refund after deducting the applicable processing fee. The hostel admission fee paid at the time of booking is non-refundable once a room has been allotted, even if the student ultimately doesn’t join the hostel.

Hostel caution deposits are refunded when you vacate the hostel. Mess fees are refunded on a pro-rata monthly basis, according to VIT’s published refund schedule.
