Getting a number that surprised you?
The most common reason for this mistake is that you were averaging your SGPA directly.
Many students add all their SGPAs and divide by the number of semesters. That only works if every semester has the same number of credits.
Most universities don’t work that way. A semester with 26 credits carries more weight than one with 18 credits. The calculator accounts for that difference automatically. If your result is lower than your manual estimate, the credit difference is usually the reason.
Why your CGPA came out the way it did
Your CGPA is a weighted average. This means semesters with more credits have a bigger impact on your final CGPA
CGPA = (SGPA₁ × Credits₁ + SGPA₂ × Credits₂ + … + SGPAₙ × Creditsₙ) ÷ Total credits
Here is a simple example:
| Semester | SGPA | Credits | Weighted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sem 1 | 8.5 | 16 | 136 |
| Sem 2 | 6.0 | 24 | 144 |
Total weighted: 280
Total credits: 40
CGPA: 7.0
If you simply average 8.5 and 6.0 SGPAs, you get 7.25. But the actual CGPA is 7.0 because semester 2 had more credits and therefore carried more weight. That gap grows as credit differences across semesters increase.
What SGPA do you need next semester?
Many students want to know how much they need to score in the next semester to reach a target CGPA.
Here is the formula-
Required SGPA = {(Target CGPA × Total credits after next semester) − (Current CGPA × Credits so far)} ÷ Credits in next semester
Let’s understand this formula with a real example. Your current CGPA is 7.2 across 88 credits, 4 semesters at 22 credits each. You want to finish at 7.5. Next semester has 22 credits.
Required SGPA = {(7.5 × 110) − (7.2 × 88)} ÷ 22 = (825 − 633.6) ÷ 22 = 191.4 ÷ 22 = 8.7
In this example, you need an SGPA of 8.7 in the next semester to increase your CGPA from 7.2 to 7.5. Improving your CGPA becomes harder as you complete more semesters. That’s why recovering from a low SGPA is usually easier in the early semester than in the final year. A bad SGPA in semester 2 is cheaper to recover from than the same number in semester 6.
Your CGPA in every format you’ll need
Many universities and scholarship applications ask for your score in a different format.
| CGPA (10 Points) | Percentage (UGC ×9.5) | US GPA (4.0 Scale) | UK Classification |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10.0 | 95.0% | 4.0 | First Class |
| 9.5 | 90.3% | 3.9 | First Class |
| 9.0 | 85.5% | 3.7 | First Class |
| 8.5 | 80.8% | 3.5 | First Class |
| 8.0 | 76.0% | 3.3 | First Class |
| 7.5 | 71.3% | 3.0 | 2:1 (Upper Second) |
| 7.0 | 66.5% | 2.8 | 2:1 (Upper Second) |
| 6.5 | 61.8% | 2.5 | 2:2 (Lower Second) |
| 6.0 | 57.0% | 2.3 | 2:2 (Lower Second) |
| 5.5 | 52.3% | 2.0 | Third Class |
| 5.0 | 47.5% | 1.7 | Third Class |
Some universities, such as Anna University, VTU, Mumbai University, and JNTU, use their own conversion methods. For scholarship applications or any official submission, use your university’s official formula.
The US GPA column is an estimate. Some universities and credential evaluation agencies may calculate a slightly different GPA. If you plan to study in Canada, get the WES (World Education Services) evaluation done early.
What companies actually require
These are common CGPA requirements seen in many campus placements. Always check the latest recruitment notification because actual eligibility criteria can vary by role, campus, and hiring year.
| Company | Typical CGPA Range | Stream | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| TCS | 6.0+ | All | NQT score carries more weight post-shortlist |
| Infosys | 6.0+ | All | No active backlogs at time of joining |
| Wipro | 6.0+ | All | 60% or 6.0 CGPA throughout academics |
| Accenture | 6.0–6.5+ | All | Application Track and Advanced Tech Track |
| Cognizant | 6.0+ | All | GenC and GenC Elevate have separate test formats |
| HCL | 6.0+ | Engineering | TechBee program has separate eligibility |
| Capgemini | 6.0+ | All | No active backlogs at time of joining |
| L&T Technology | 6.5+ | Engineering | Core engineering roles |
| Deloitte | 6.0–6.5+ | All | USI division recruitment varies by campus |
| Amazon | 7.0–8.0+ | CS/IT Preferred | On-campus drives; off-campus is more flexible |
Off-campus through LinkedIn and company career portals run with softer filters. If you’re below the cutoff for a company you want, apply directly through their careers page before ruling it out.
Questions students ask after calculating their CGPAs
My SGPA has improved every semester, but my CGPA has barely moved. Why?
Your CGPA includes every semester you’ve completed. As your total credits increase, each new semester has a smaller effect on your overall CGPA.
A good SGPA in later semesters still helps, but it usually won’t change your CGPA as quickly as it would have in the early semesters.
For example, if you scored around 6.0 in your first few semesters and around 8.5 later, your final CGPA will fall somewhere between those numbers. The lower early semesters remain part of the calculation.
My friend and I have the same SGPA every semester but different CGPAs. How?
Your credit loads are different. If your friend took 24 credits in a semester where you took 18, and both of you scored a low SGPA that semester, your friend’s CGPA took a bigger hit from it than yours did.
Check the credits column when entering data. Even a 2-credit difference per semester adds up across 6 to 8 semesters.
One bad SGPA semester is still dragging my CGPA. How much damage is it actually doing?
It depends on how low the SGPA was and how many credits that semester carried. In most cases, one poor semester affects your CGPA, but strong performance in later semesters gradually reduces its impact.
For example, if you get 5.5 SGPA in one semester and around 7.5 SGPA in the remaining semesters, your final CGPA will usually be closer to 7.0–7.5 than to 5.5.
One bad semester can lower your CGPA, but it usually does not define your final result. Consistent improvement in later semesters matters more.
I missed a company’s cutoff by 0.2. Can I still apply?
For many on-campus placements, eligibility filters are applied automatically. If your CGPA is below the requirement, your application may not proceed to the next stage.
The minimum requirements of Off-campus hiring are more flexible. If you are slightly below the preferred CGPA, you can apply through LinkedIn, company career pages and job portals. Some companies list CGPA as a preference rather than a strict requirement.
Platforms such as AMCAT and HirePro are also worth checking. Some companies recruit through these platforms, where the first filter is your test score. A strong test score, good projects, and relevant skills sometimes matter more than a small difference in CGPA.
My CGPA is 8+, but I have no internship or projects. Is that a problem?
With the CGPA, you can comfortably clear the initial eligibility criteria in many service companies like TCS, Infosys, Wipro, and HCL.
For product companies, software roles, analytics positions, and some core engineering jobs, projects and practical experience matter a lot. A good CGPA shows your academic consistency, while internships or projects show your skills and problem-solving abilities.
Not having internships or projects may limit some opportunities where practical experience is important. If your placement season has not started yet, consider building at least one project related to your field. A well-documented project can help you to explain your skills during interviews and strengthen your resume.
Can a strong GATE score make up for a CGPA below 7.5 for M.Tech?
Sometimes, yes.
IITs, NITs, and many state technical universities consider both the GATE score and academic performance during M.Tech admissions. A very strong GATE rank in those institutions can push you above candidates with higher CGPAs.
Some departments may also have minimum CGPA requirements. Always check the latest admission brochure because eligibility rules can vary by institute, department, and year.
If your CGPA is below 7.5, focusing on a strong GATE score is often one of the best ways to strengthen your application.
Important: Placement cutoffs, admission requirements, scholarship rules, and hiring policies may change over time. Use this guide as a starting point, but always verify the latest information on the official website before applying or making any academic, admission, scholarship, or career-related decision.
