When you miss the required SGPA this semester

The required SGPA is the score that you need to reach your target CGPA. If you score below that, your target CGPA is harder to achieve.

Let’s look at an example. Suppose your-

Current CGPA Total Credits Target CGPA Required SGPA
7.0 22 7.5 9.0

If you score 7.8 SGPA instead of 9.0, your new CGPA becomes 7.2. Your CGPA will increase, but it will still be below your target. And the required SGPA for the next semester will be higher. Missing the target once is recoverable. Missing it repeatedly can make your goal much harder to reach.

If you miss the required SGPA, update your latest CGPA in the calculator. Check the new required SGPA and adjust your study plan accordingly.

Setting your CGPA target for a purpose

A CGPA target without a purpose is just a number. Set a target based on your goal.

For campus placements:

Most companies, such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro and Cognizant have CGPA eligibility criteria. A CGPA of 7.0 or above keeps you eligible for most opportunities and gives you more options during placements.

For M.Tech at IITs and NITs:

Most IIT and NIT M.Tech programs require a minimum CGPA for eligibility. A CGPA of 7.5 or above is considered safe. Maintaining a CGPA of 8.0 or above can improve your chances in a competitive department.

For IIM MBA shortlists:

Academic scores are considered in the selection process of many IIMs. They give extra marks based on your academic scores. A CGPA of 7.5 or above helps maintain a strong academic profile.

For study abroad:

Most universities in the UK and Australia require a strong academic profile. A CGPA of 7.0 and above can make you eligible for many top-tier colleges. If admission requirements are listed as percentages rather than CGPA, use our CGPA to Percentage Calculator to estimate your eligibility.

Before setting your target CGPA, check the requirements of the companies or programs you are aiming for. Then use the required SGPA calculator to find the SGPA you need.

How backlogs change the required SGPA math

A backlog does not only affect one subject. It can also affect your CGPA and increase your required SGPA for every remaining semester.

Until the backlog is cleared, it is counted as 0 grade points in that semester. That 0 grade drops your cumulative CGPA score. A lower CGPA makes your target harder to reach. This means the required SGPA in the future semester may increase.

The best approach is to clear the backlogs as early as possible. The longer a backlog remains, the harder it becomes to achieve your target CGPA. Clean pending backlogs early and plan your studies around your target. After clearing a backlog, recalculate your overall CGPA using our CGPA Calculator to see how much your academic record has improved.

Questions worth asking after seeing your required SGPA

I scored below my required SGPA this semester. Is my CGPA target still reachable?

Yes, your target CGPA may still be achievable if you have multiple semesters remaining. Check the new required SGPA in the calculator after the results are announced. If it is still within a realistic range, your target is achievable.

Missing the target once is often manageable. But if you miss the target repeatedly without adjusting your plan, it makes the target harder to reach.

My required SGPA went up this semester, even though I scored better than last semester. Why?

Your required SGPA depends on two things. One is the gap between your current CGPA and target CGPA, and the other is the number of semesters remaining. Even if your CGPA improves this semester, the required SGPA can increase when you have fewer semesters left to reach the target.

I have one semester left, and my required SGPA is 9.3. What should I do?

First, ask yourself whether a 9.3 SGPA is genuinely achievable. If not, try a slightly lower CGPA target in the calculator and check the new required SGPA. If a slightly lower CGPA target gives you a realistic required SGPA, it may be the better option. A realistic target with a clear plan is better than chasing an unrealistic one.

Also, checked that the revised CGPA still meets your placement, higher studies or scholarship requirements.

Does clearing a backlog improve my required SGPA?

Yes, in most cases. When a backlog is cleared, the grade changes from 0 to a passing value. It improves your academic record and may reduce the required SGPA in future semesters. Try to clear backlogs at the first supplementary exam. The longer you take to clear backlogs, the harder it may become to reach your target score.

My target CGPA is 7.5. Should I raise it if I’m aiming for an M.Tech program at an IIT?

With a 7.5 CGPA, you meet the eligibility requirements for many IIT M.Tech programs. But some departments are more competitive and require higher CGPAs. If a specific IIT or department is your goal, consider targeting a CGPA of 8.0. Run the calculator. If the required SGPA is still achievable, 8.0 is the smarter target.
