How the FFCS course selection actually affects your GPA
Most VIT students choose courses during FFCS based on faculty reputation and class timings. Both are reasonable reasons to choose subjects. But you need to pay attention to course credits.
Every course in FFCS has a credit value. A low grade in a 4-credit theory course affects your GPA more than the same grade in a 2-credit lab course. Faculty grading patterns can also make a difference. Some faculty members are known for stricter grading, while others may have a more balanced grade distribution.
Before the next FFCS, look at your transcript and identify the credit-heavy courses where your grades were lower than expected. If those courses have multiple faculty options or sections, spend some time researching them before making your selection.

The grade you see on VTOP and the grade that went into your GPA
Many students get confused when they check their results on VTOP.
Sometimes, VTOP may show a provisional or temporarily calculated grade before the final result is fully processed. If you check your result immediately after it is released, and then recheck it a week later. You may notice a slightly different grade later. The updated result is the final result. It is also important to understand how VIT converts letter grades into grade points. Under VIT’s grading system:

Questions VIT students actually run into
My GPA this semester is the same as last semester, but my CGPA has changed. Why?
Your CGPA is a credit-weighted average of all the semesters. If this semester had more credits than the previous one, it could have a bigger impact on your CGPA. For example, the same GPA in a 24-credit semester affects your CGPA more than the same GPA in an 18-credit semester. As you complete more semesters, your total credits keep increasing. Because of this, the impact of any single semester on your CGPA becomes smaller over time.
I picked a course in FFCS based on the professor’s rating, but still got a bad grade. What happened?
A professor’s reputation and grade distribution are not always the same thing. Popular professors are often preferred by high-performing students, which can create tougher competition within the class. And VIT uses a relative grading method. So, your grade depends on how you perform compared to other students in your section. A strong group of students can sometimes make it harder to score higher grades than in a less competitive section. That’s why it is useful to check both faculty feedback and past grading patterns before choosing courses in FFCS.
I got an F in one subject but passed everything else. Can I still register for campus placements?
Most CCD placement registrations check both your CGPA and active backlogs. An uncleared F grade is usually treated as an active backlog. Because of this, you may not be eligible for many Dream and Super Dream companies that require no active backlogs. If possible, clear the backlog before the placement season begins.
My friend is in the same course with a different FFCS section and got a higher grade with similar marks. How?
VIT uses relative grading, and each section is graded separately. Your section has its own class performance distribution, and your friend’s section has a different one. Because of this, two students with the same marks in different sections of the same course can receive different final grades. The grading curve depends on the performance of students within that particular section.
Does VIT allow grade improvement if I want to retake a passed course?
VIT previously allowed students to improve their grades for some passed courses under specific conditions. However, the rules and eligibility have changed over time. Ask your academic advisor or the examination section on VTOP for the latest policy. It is better to rely on official information because these rules have changed multiple times in the past.
