VIT grades on a curve, and that matters here
VIT uses relative grading, not absolute marks. This means your grade depends partly on how the rest of the class performs, not just on your own marks. A difficult course or a tough grading curve can lower your CGPA even when you understand the subject well. That won’t change the number on your transcript. Where you stand for placements
VIT placements are usually grouped into three categories: Mass Recruiters, Dream Companies, and Super Dream Companies. Each category has different CGPA requirements. Many mass recruiters accept students with a CGPA between 6.0 and 6.5. So, you already meet the eligibility criteria for those companies.
Many Dream and Super Dream companies prefer a CGPA of 7.0 or above. These cutoffs can change from year to year depending on the company. So, it is good to check the latest eligibility criteria before applying.
Your CGPA to percentage conversion is different here
VIT does not use the ×9.5 standard conversion method. The formula that VIT uses:
Percentage = CGPA × 10
That means that a 7.5 CGPA becomes 75% under this method. Before submitting any official form, use VIT’s conversion formula instead of the 9.5 method used by many other universities. A small difference in the number can create bigger problems during document verification.
Scholarship continuation
If your CGPA dropped into this range from a higher starting point, check whether your scholarship slab has changed. Many scholarship schemes do not cancel the scholarship immediately when the CGPA falls. Instead, the scholarship amount may be reduced if your CGPA falls below a certain level. A CGPA of 7.0 or above meets the minimum requirement for many Dream companies. Some Super Dream companies also accept students in this range, but the cutoff varies by company. Higher studies: VITMEE and beyond

Full placement tier access
You’re eligible for Mass Recruiter, Dream, and Super Dream companies based on your CGPA. At this stage, CGPA is no longer the main factor in the selection process. Coding skills, technical knowledge, projects, internships, and interview performance matter much more. Many Super Dream companies have highly competitive selection processes. A strong CGPA helps you become eligible, but your projects, coding skills, internships, and interview performance usually play a bigger role in the final selection.
VIT’s international exchange programs
VIT offers student exchange and dual-degree programs with universities in different countries. An 8.0+ CGPA usually meets the minimum requirement for many of these programs. How your course grade actually gets built
Many VIT students think the FAT is the only exam that matters and treat CATs as less important. In reality, both contribute significantly to your final grade.
Most VIT courses calculate grades using CAT 1, CAT 2, quizzes or digital assignments, and the FAT. The exact weightage depends on the course and school. In many subjects, the combined weight of CATs and assignments is equal to or higher than the FAT. This means good performance in CAT 1 and CAT 2 can give you a strong advantage before the FAT begins.
One poor FAT score does not always ruin your final grade. At the same time, depending on the FAT, recovering from poor CAT scores can be risky. That’s because part of your grade is already decided before the final exam. Check your course handout at the beginning of the semester to see the exact weightage for that subject.
Why your final-year project courses move your CGPA more than you’d expect
The credit structure at VIT is not the same throughout your degree. In the early semesters, most courses carry 3 or 4 credits. In the later semesters, project courses, technical electives, and design courses often carry 6 to 10 credits.
Since CGPA is based on credits, a high-credit course affects your CGPA more than a low-credit course. An 8-credit capstone project with a good grade can improve your CGPA much more than a 3-credit course with the same grade.
Example:
Suppose your CGPA before the final year is 7.4 across 160 credits.
In your last two semesters, suppose you complete:
➡️ A 10-credit capstone project with a grade of 9
➡️ Other courses worth 24 credits with an average grade of 8
This single capstone project increases your CGPA by 0.16 points. The reverse can happen too. A poor grade in a high-credit project course can hurt your CGPA more than a poor grade in a regular theory course. That’s why project and capstone courses deserve as much attention as placement preparation and final exams.
If you think your answer script was misevaluated
VIT allows students to apply for script review and re-evaluation through VTOP after results are announced. The application window usually opens shortly after the results are published and remains open for a limited time. If you miss the deadline, you’ll generally need to wait until the next semester. Since dates can vary slightly each semester, check VTOP or VIT’s official website for the latest schedule.
Questions VIT students actually face
My CATs were strong, but I still got a lower grade than I expected. Is this because of relative grading?
Possibly. VIT uses relative grading in many courses, so your final grade depends not only on your marks but also on how other students performed. If your scores looked good but your grade was lower than expected, the grading curve may be one reason. You can’t verify it by yourself, but many students notice this in competitive courses.
Can I retake a course I already passed to improve my grade?
VIT previously allowed students to improve their grades for some passed courses. However, the rules and eligibility have changed over time. Before making plans, check the latest policy on VTOP or speak with your academic advisor about the availability of the improvement attempts.
I withdrew from a course mid-semester. Does the W grade affect my CGPA?
Usually, a W (Withdrawal) grade is not included in CGPA calculations, unlike an F grade. However, it still appears on your transcript and may affect your credit completion for that semester. Withdrawal windows open for a short period, so always check the academic calendar for the deadlines.
My capstone project changed my CGPA more than a regular course. Why?
Capstone and project courses often carry more credits than regular theory courses. Since CGPA is calculated using course credits, a high-credit course has a bigger impact on your CGPA. This is normal, not a calculation error.
How can I check the CAT and FAT weightage for my course?
The weightage is usually listed in the course handout or shared by the faculty at the start of the semester. It can vary between courses and schools within VIT. So don’t assume every course follows the same pattern. If you’re unsure, ask your faculty or check the course portal.
