π― Your Personalised GPA Guide
Your GPA this semester is below 6.0. At SRM, this can affect several parts of your academic journey, so check these things first.
Check for arrears first
If you get any F grade (arrear/backlog), it carries 0 grade points while still counting toward your attempted credits. This is why a single failed subject can significantly reduce your GPA. Check the latest exam schedule with your class advisor. Clear the arrears in the next available exam through your department. Don’t delay it unnecessarily. Clearing it early makes the next semester much easier.
How does this affect your CGPA
Suppose your CGPA is 7.2 after 66 credits, and you score a 5.4 GPA in a 22-credit semester.
New CGPA = (7.2 Γ 66 + 5.4 Γ 22) Γ· 88 = 6.75
One weak semester pulls your CGPA from 7.2 to 6.75. This lowers your CGPA by 0.45 points. Now it is quite hard to recover it in the upcoming semesters. Use a Required SGPA Calculator to find the SGPA you need in your upcoming semesters and plan your studies accordingly.
Your scholarship is very likely affected
Many SRM scholarships require you to maintain a minimum CGPA with no active arrears. A CGPA below 6.0 can affect the continuation of your scholarship. Contact your university’s scholarship office to confirm the renewal requirements and process. Donβt assume that your scholarship will continue automatically.
What you should do now
β Register for your arrear exam as soon as possible.
β Check your scholarship renewal requirements.
β Aim for a much stronger GPA next semester to recover your CGPA.
π― Your Personalised GPA Guide
You’re above basic placement eligibility at SRM. But your next goal depends on your campus and scholarship requirements.
How does this affect your CGPA
Suppose your CGPA is 7.0 after 66 credits, and you score 6.5 GPA in a 22-credit semester.
New CGPA = (7.0 Γ 66 + 6.5 Γ 22) Γ· 88 = 6.89
This is only a small drop. It is manageable if it happens only once. But repeated GPAs in this range can gradually reduce your final CGPA.
Your specific campus matters for placements
SRM does not follow a single placement criterion across all campuses. SRM campuses such as Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, Vadapalani, Delhi-NCR (Sonipat), and SRM-AP have separate placement processes and recruiters. A CGPA of 6.0 generally meets the university’s basic eligibility. But many companies set higher CGPA cutoffs for specific campuses. Always check your own campus placement cell rather than relying on the eligibility criteria of another SRM campus.
Scholarship renewal depends on your CGPA band
Many SRM scholarships use CGPA bands for renewal. Even a small drop can move you to a lower renewal band or reduce your tuition waiver. Some scholarships also require no active arrears. Check your scholarship’s renewal rules to confirm the required CGPA and arrear conditions. If youβre unsure, contact your university’s scholarship office to confirm the renewal requirements and process.
What you should do now
β Check your campus’s latest placement eligibility list.
β Confirm your scholarship renewal CGPA requirements.
β Aim for a GPA above 7.5 next semester to strengthen your final CGPA.
π― Your Personalised GPA Guide
Youβre now eligible for better placement opportunities and higher scholarship renewal tiers.
How does this semester affect your CGPA
Suppose your CGPA is 6.8 after 66 credits, and you score 7.8 GPA in a 22-credit semester.
New CGPA = (6.8 Γ 66 + 7.8 Γ 22) Γ· 88 = 7.05
A CGPA above 7.0 improves your eligibility for scholarship renewal bands and companies. Many companies set CGPA cutoffs above the university minimum. A 7.0+ CGPA is more competitive than SRMβs placement eligibility.
Scholarship benefits improve around 8.0 CGPA
At many SRM campuses, maintaining an 8.0+ CGPA can move you to a higher scholarship renewal band. In some cases, it can also increase the tuition fee waiver. If you are currently around 7.6-7.8 CGPA, aim to cross 8.0 CGPA next semester. You can use a Required SGPA Calculator to know your required SGPA.
GATE and higher studies
A strong GATE score combined with this CGPA makes you competitive for M.Tech admission at IITs and NITs. Most institutes consider both your GATE score and CGPA, not CGPA alone. If higher studies are your goal, this is the right stage to prepare for GATE alongside your academics.
What you should do now
β Check how close you are to your scholarship’s next renewal band.
β If you’re close to 8.0, plan your next semester to cross it.
β If you’re preparing for higher studies, begin GATE preparation alongside your coursework.
π― Your Personalised GPA Guide
Your GPA this semester is above 8.0. This is an excellent result at SRM. At this stage, focus on making the most of the opportunities available to you.
How does this semester affect your CGPA
Suppose your CGPA is 7.5 after 66 credits, and you score 9.0 GPA in a 22-credit semester.
A strong semester gives your CGPA a meaningful boost. If you maintain this performance, you can graduate with an 8.5+ CGPA. It strengthens your chances for placements, scholarships, and higher studies.
The 9.0 line catches students who feel safe at 8.5
Many SRM scholarships reserve their highest renewal tier for students with a 9.0+ CGPA. A CGPA of 8.5 or 8.6 is excellent, but it may still fall below the highest scholarship band. Always check your exact renewal criteria for your scholarship program to confirm the requirements and process. Most students assume that a CGPA above 8.0 qualifies for the maximum benefit. If your CGPA is close to the requirement of the highest renewal tier, aim for that CGPA.
Where does this GPA range take you at SRM?
An 8.0+ CGPA comfortably clears placement eligibility across SRM campuses and strengthens your profile for postgraduate programs. Remember that each SRM campus has its own placement requirements and recruiter criteria. Always check your current campus placement requirements, not the other campuses. If you’re interested in research, reach out to faculty whose work matches your interests. Such research experience can strengthen your profile for M.Tech, MS, or PhD admissions.
What you should do now
β Check the exact CGPA required to qualify for your scholarship’s highest renewal tier.
β If you’re interested in research, work on projects with faculty members in your department.

How your grade is actually built
At SRM, your final course grade does not depend only on your final exam. It is based on both continuous internal assessment and the end-of-semester exam. Internal assessments (tests, quizzes, assignments, and practicals, where applicable) are combined with your end-semester marks to determine your final grade and grade point.
A commonly used pattern is 40 marks for internal assessment and 60 marks for the end-of-semester exam. Thisgives you a total score out of 100. However, the exact weightage may vary by course, program, or academic regulations. So always refer to your department’s official scheme.
The biggest advantage of this system is that your internal assessment marks are usually available before the final results are announced. If your final grade is lower than expected, compare your internal and end-semester performance. This helps you identify where marks were lost. It also means that a weaker end-of-semester exam does not always ruin your overall grade. It sometimes happens due to your poor performance in the internal assessment.
If you think there’s an error in your evaluation
SRM allows three different post-result options: Review, Revaluation, and Retotaling. Each serves a different purpose, so choose the one that matches your concern.
Review: Your answer script is checked again for evaluation quality.
Revaluation: Your script is evaluated independently by another examiner.
Retotaling: Only verifies whether marks were added correctly. Answers are not re-evaluated.
The application window is short. Applying for the wrong option can waste the limited opportunities. You generally have 7 days after the results are declared to apply, and the university usually communicates the outcome within 10 working days. But the timeline may change. Check the latest notification for your batch for the exact information.
The application process also varies by faculty and campus. Engineering & Technology, Management, Law, Medical & Health Sciences, and Agricultural Sciences may use different forms or portals. Campuses such as Kattankulathur, Ramapuram, Vadapalani, Trichy, and NCR can also follow different procedures. Always download the form from the Controller of Examinations page for your specific faculty and campus.
If your revaluation mark changes by more than 10%, SRM appoints a third examiner. The final score is then calculated as the average of the two closest marks among the three evaluations. It ensures that one unusually high or low evaluation does not unfairly affect your result. Review, Revaluation, and Retotaling are generally not available for practical, clinical, or viva-voce examinations. For issues related to these assessments, contact your department directly.
What actually disqualifies you from a university medal?
A high CGPA is not enough to qualify you for a Chancellor’s Medal or similar academic awards. At some SRM campuses, medal selection is based on 50% CGPA and 50% additional eligibility criteria, with certain conditions. You may become ineligible if you:
Clear any course through a reappearance, arrear, or repeat examination.
Pass a course using grace marks.
Have been detained due to attendance shortage in any semester.
Take more than one attempt to clear a course.
This means a student with an excellent CGPA can still miss out on a university medal if any of the above conditions apply. If earning a medal or academic rank is one of your goals, it’s important to know these rules from your first or second year. At this stage, you still have time to avoid them.
Eligibility rules may vary across SRM campuses and faculties. Always confirm the latest medal criteria with your campus academic office before making academic decisions.
Frequently asked questions
What’s the actual difference between review, revaluation, and retotaling at SRM?
Review checks whether your answer script was evaluated correctly. Revaluation sends your answer script to another examiner for independent evaluation. Retotaling only verifies whether your marks were added correctly. It does not re-evaluate your answers. Choose the option that matches your concern, as each follows a different process.
How long do I have to apply? Does it differ by faculty?
You generally have 7 days from the publication of results to apply. However, the application form and portal may differ by faculty and campus. Engineering & Technology, Management, Law, Medical & Health Sciences, and Agricultural Sciences may follow different procedures. Check the Controller of Examinations page for the correct form and instructions for your faculty and campus.
Can I apply for revaluation for a lab exam or viva voce?
No. Review, Revaluation, and Retotaling apply only to theory answer scripts. Practical, clinical, and viva voce examinations are not covered under this process. If you have an issue with a lab or viva score, contact your department directly.
My internal assessment marks are lower than expected. Can I contest them separately?
Yes, but before the final result is published. Internal assessment marks are usually available on the student portal before the final results are published. If you notice an issue, raise it with your course faculty or department immediately. Once the final result is published, Review and Revaluation apply only to the overall theory evaluation, not to internal assessment marks alone.
I cleared an arrear early in my degree, and it no longer impacts my CGPA. Could it still cost me something?
Possibly. If you’re aiming for a university medal or academic rank, some SRM campuses may disqualify students who cleared a course through a reappearance, arrear, or repeat examination. This doesn’t affect your degree classification or placements in the same way. But if a medal is important to you, check your campus’s latest eligibility rules.
Note: Scholarship bands, placement criteria, and campus policies can change over time. Always verify the latest requirements with your campus placement cell or scholarship office before making academic decisions.
