
CGPA is calculated using a simple formula:

Quality points are calculated by multiplying the grade point of each subject by its credit value. The formula is simple, but students often get incorrect results because they use the wrong inputs, ignore special subjects, or apply the wrong grading scale. This guide explains all three.
What you need before you calculate anything
Grade points, not marks
Your marksheet shows a grade (O, A+, A, B+, and so on), not your raw marks. Universities assign a numerical value to each grade. For example, if you enter 78 instead of the corresponding grade point (usually 8 on a 10-point scale), it will give an incorrect CGPA.
Credits per subject, not subject count
Every subject has a credit value, usually between 1 and 4. It is not a fixed number. The credit value is based on teaching hours and practical components. Credits determine how much each subject contributes to your CGPA. A 4-credit theory course has a much greater impact than a 1-credit lab with the same grade. You can find credit values on your marksheet or official curriculum.
Use your university’s grading scale
Always calculate CGPA using your university’s official grade-point mapping.
A common 10-point scale is:

The formula and the mistake that breaks it
For one semester:
SGPA = Σ(Credits × Grade points) ÷ Σ(Credits)
Multiply each subject’s grade point by its credits, add the results, and divide by the total semester credits.
For your cumulative CGPA across multiple semesters:
CGPA = Σ(SGPA × Semester credits) ÷ Σ(Total credits across all semesters)
Each semester’s SGPA must be weighted by its total credits, not averaged equally across semesters.
The mistake most students make
This second formula is where most calculation guides and most students go wrong. Many students calculate their CGPA by simply averaging the SGPA from all semesters. That only works if every semester has the same number of credits. In reality, the number of credits varies because of electives, labs, projects, internships, or lighter/heavier semesters. That’s why a simple average can therefore give the wrong CGPA. This wrong CGPA affects your placements, higher studies and scholarship programs.
Other CGPA formulas you might come across
Most Indian universities use the standard credit-weighted formula explained above. However, you may also come across other CGPA or GPA formulas. Here’s when they apply.
The CBSE Class 10 board formula
CBSE uses the simple average formula to calculate CGPA.
CGPA = (Sum of grade points of your 5 main subjects) ÷ 5
CBSE follow this simple average formula because all five main subjects carry equal weight. This formula is only for school-level boards. This method does not apply to a university, where subjects have different credit values.
GPA on the 4.0 scale
Many universities in the US and other countries use the same credit-weighted calculation. But they follow a 4.0 grading scale instead of a 10-point scale.
GPA = Σ(Credit hours × Grade points, 4.0 scale) ÷ Σ(Credit hours)
A common scale is:

Don’t convert a 10-point CGPA to a 4.0 GPA by simple multiplication. Use your university’s official conversion policy or the requirements of the institution you’re applying to.
The older 7-point scale
Some Indian universities also use a 7-point grading system. In the past, universities followed this grading scale. But later, most universities use the new 10-point grading system.
A common scale is:

Which Formula Should You Use?
Check your marksheet or grade card first. Your marksheet or grade card usually mentions the grading scale. If not, the highest grade point (10, 7, or 4) tells you which system you’re using. For almost all Indian university students, the 10-point credit-weighted formula is the correct method for calculating CGPA.

SGPA = 109 ÷ 16 = 6.81
Important: A failed subject contributes 0 quality points, but its credits are still counted. Excluding failed-course credits will give you an incorrect SGPA.
Now the cumulative CGPA after both semesters
❌ Incorrect: Simple Average
(8.00 + 6.81) ÷ 2 = 7.41
✅ Correct: Credit-Weighted Method
CGPA = (8.00 × 13 + 6.81 × 16) ÷ (13 + 16) = (104 + 108.96) ÷ 29 = 212.96 ÷ 29 = 7.34
Every subject has a different credit load. But the simple average treats both semesters equally. That’s why it gives a different result than your actual CGPA. The credit-weighted formula gives more weight to semesters with more credits. In this example, the difference is 0.07 CGPA after just two semesters. As more semesters are added, the gap can become even larger.

You don’t know your subject credits
Never assume every subject carries the same credit value. Using equal credits creates the same mistake as averaging semester SGPA directly. Always check your curriculum, scheme document, or university’s official website for the correct credit value of each subject before calculating your CGPA.
Audit or Pass/Fail courses
Audit and Pass/Fail courses are usually excluded from CGPA calculations. They don’t contribute credits or quality points. Always check your grade card or university regulations before including them. If you add them by mistake, it changes your calculation.
A failed subject was cleared later
Until your university officially updates your academic record, treat a failed subject like any other failed course. The credits of those subjects remain in the calculation, while they provide 0 quality points. Some universities later revise the original semester after a backlog is cleared. Others record the passing grade separately. Check your university’s policy to understand how cleared backlogs are treated.
Your current semester isn’t complete
Don’t include an ongoing semester in your CGPA calculation. CGPA is calculated using only completed semesters with final grades. If you’re estimating your future CGPA, use a projected SGPA instead of including unfinished semesters.
How to check whether your manual calculation is actually right
If your manual calculation matches the SGPA or CGPA shown on your official marksheet, it is correct. If it doesn’t, the error is usually one of these –
- You entered marks instead of grade points.
- A subject’s credit value is incorrect.
- An audit or Pass/Fail course was included by mistake.
- The separate credits for a lab or practical course were omitted
Don’t recalculate your entire CGPA. Verify one semester at a time. It’s much easier to find an error in a single semester than to trace it through multiple semesters.
