Which problem do you actually have?
A low score after negative marking usually comes from one of two opposite habits:
You attempt too many uncertain questions, and incorrect answers reduce the marks you’ve already earned.
You attempt too few questions because you’re afraid of negative marking, leaving potential marks unclaimed.
These problems require different solutions. Compare your attempt rate with your correct answers.
A high attempt rate with low accuracy suggests excessive guessing.
A low attempt rate with reasonable accuracy suggests you’re being too cautious.
The Number That Decides Whether Guessing Helps
Every negative marking system has a break-even accuracy—the minimum accuracy needed for attempting a question to be worthwhile on average.
JEE Main and NEET follow the same negative marking ratio. You will get +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong answer. Here the break-even accuracy is 20%. A completely random guess among four options has a 25% chance of being correct, which is slightly above the break-even point. That means blind guessing has a small positive expected value.
UPSC Prelims is different. It has a 1/3rd negative marking ratio for incorrect answers across both General Studies (GS) Paper I and CSAT Paper II. With +2 and −0.66, the break-even accuracy is around 25%. It is almost the same as the probability of a random guess among four options. In this case, blind guessing is close to break-even points, so it neither significantly helps nor hurts your score on average. However, even one eliminated option can improve your expected outcome.

Your own breakeven, not the generic one
A breakeven accuracy calculation is helpful when you do pure random guessing with zero knowledge. But your situation is almost never that. If you can eliminate even one incorrect option or have a reasonable idea of the correct answer, your chances of being right are higher than blind guessing. That means your personal break-even point is better than the generic calculation suggests.
The most useful number to track is your actual accuracy on attempted questions. The best way to get this number from your recent mock tests:
Accuracy = Correct Attempts ÷ Total Attempts
If your accuracy is consistently above your exam’s break-even percentage, you’re probably skipping questions worth attempting. If it’s below the break-even point, focus on improving your subject knowledge before increasing your attempts.
Where this range usually goes wrong
Many students treat every uncertain question the same. They either attempt almost everything with less confidence or skip any question they aren’t fully confident about. Neither approach reflects how exams actually work. A question where you’ve eliminated two out of four options has much better odds than one where you’re guessing blindly. Treating both situations the same wastes the advantage you’ve already gained through partial elimination.

Your score falls between 60% and 80%. At this stage, your biggest challenge usually isn’t subject knowledge. It’s disciplined option elimination. That’s where the biggest score improvements come from. The right decision depends on your exam’s negative marking ratio—not on guesswork.
How many options you need to rule out, by ratio
Every negative marking ratio has an elimination threshold—the minimum number of wrong options you should eliminate before guessing becomes worthwhile on average.
Ratio -0.25 (JEE, NEET, most SSC and banking exams): Break-even accuracy is 20%. A random guess among four options already has a 25% chance of being correct. So, guessing can be a reasonable strategy in this situation. That doesn’t mean you should guess unnecessarily. Eliminating even one option still improves your odds.
Ratio -0.33 (UPSC Prelims, CAT MCQs): Break-even accuracy is 25%. It is almost as good as random guessing. Eliminating just one wrong option shifts the odds in your favour.
Ratio -0.50: Break-even accuracy is 33%. Blind guessing isn’t enough. Eliminate at least one option before attempting the question.
Ratio -0.66: Break-even accuracy is 40%. Eliminating one option isn’t sufficient. If you can eliminate two options, you have a 50-50 choice before attempting.
Ratio -1.00: Break-even accuracy is 50%. You should attempt only when you’ve narrowed the question to two equally likely options. Anything less is usually not worth the risk.
Always confirm the negative marking ratio of an exam before applying the same strategy to every exam. A method that works in JEE can lose more marks in exams using -0.66 or -1.00.
The exception worth knowing is if CAT is on your list
TITA (Type in the Answer) questions at CAT don’t have negative marking. Only MCQs do. Because there’s no penalty, the elimination rules above don’t apply to TITA questions. The real challenge is time. TITA questions often take longer and may have lower accuracy, so you should focus on time management.

Where this actually happens
Review your last few mock tests and focus on the final 10–15 minutes of each section. High scorers often lose more marks during this period than in the middle of the exam. It happens not because the questions become harder, but because time pressure leads to poorer decisions. Questions you’d normally skip often become rushed guesses simply because the clock is running down.
The fix isn’t more speed; it’s a cutoff rule
Set your elimination threshold before the exam and follow it even when time is running out. Many top scorers perform better by following a simple rule. For example, they guess only in the last 10 minutes after eliminating at least two options, rather than making rushed decisions under pressure.

The number that tells you more than your score does
Your final score after negative marking tells you how one attempt went. It doesn’t tell you whether your attempt strategy is actually improving. A better metric is marks per attempt—your net score divided by the number of questions you attempted (not the total questions in the paper).
For example, if you attempt 60 questions in a +4/-1 exam and score 90 marks, your marks per attempt are 1.5. If another mock test gives you the same 90 marks after attempting 80 questions, your marks per attempt drop to 1.125. In both cases, the final score is the same. But the second attempt involved taking more risk, and this metric clearly shows the difference.
Don’t judge this number from a single mock test. Track it across several tests.
Arising marks-per-attempt trend, even if your overall score stays the same or drops slightly, usually means your question selection is improving.
Ahigher score with a falling marks-per-attempt often means you benefited from an easier paper rather than a better strategy.
Your overall score reflects one exam. Marks per attempt and time tracking reflect the quality of your decision-making.
Why a comfortable overall score can still fail you
If your target exam has sectional cutoffs as well as an overall cutoff, your total score can hide a serious weakness in one section. This is common in exams like IBPS PO and SBI PO. Clearing the overall cutoff isn’t enough if you fail to meet the minimum score in any individual section.
For example, a strong Quant score can compensate for a weak Reasoning score in your total marks, while your Reasoning section remains below its cutoff. The negative marking ratio is often the same across sections, but your attempt strategy shouldn’t be. The lower accuracy sections show your careless attempts that cause the most damage.
Don’t calculate marks per attempt only for the entire paper. Calculate it separately for each section in your next mock test. If one section’s mark per attempt is noticeably lower than the others, improve your attempt strategy in that section first.
The answer-changing habit worth reconsidering
Many students believe they should never change their first answer, especially in exams with negative marking. However, decades of research suggest the opposite. Studies dating back to the 1920s, including a large-scale ETS study of more than 8,000 GRE test takers, found that answer changes are more likely to go from wrong to right than from right to wrong.
Researchers call the belief that your first answer is always best the first instinct fallacy. It persists because wrong-to-wrong changes are easy to forget, while changing a correct answer to a wrong one feels far more painful and stays in memory. If you’re about to answer a blank question, you’re taking on new risk. But if you’ve already answered a question and are reviewing it, changing your answer doesn’t create new risk—you accepted that risk when you first attempted it. On review, your answer can change in three ways:

Research consistently shows that wrong-to-right changes happen more often than right-to-wrong changes. So, sticking with your first answer isn’t always the best choice when you’re reviewing a question you’ve already attempted.
Flag the questions that felt uncertain during your first attempt. When reviewing them, change an answer only if you have a clear reason—for example, you misread the question, remembered a relevant concept, or spotted a calculation mistake. Avoid changing an answer based only on a vague feeling or second-guessing.

Should I change an answer every time I have doubts during review?
No. Don’t change an answer automatically, but don’t avoid changing it out of fear either. Research supports thoughtful revision, not random changes. Change an answer only when you have a clear reason—such as spotting a misread question, remembering a relevant fact, or finding a calculation mistake. A vague feeling is not a good reason to change your answer.
What’s a good marks-per-attempt number to aim for?
There isn’t a universal target because it depends on your exam’s marking scheme. What matters more is your trend over multiple mock tests. Calculate your marks per attempt for your last 4–5 mocks and see whether it’s improving. A consistently rising marks-per-attempt, even if your overall score stays flat or drops slightly, usually means your attempt decisions are getting better.
Do sectional cutoffs use a different negative marking ratio than the overall exam?
Usually not. Most exams use the same negative marking ratio across all sections. What changes is the impact. A few careless attempts in your weakest section can pull that section below its cutoff, even if your overall score looks comfortable.
My gut says I know the answer, but my mock test accuracy says otherwise. Which should I trust?
Trust your measured accuracy, not your gut—at least until both begin to match. Review a few recent mock tests and compare how confident you felt with whether you actually answered correctly. If your confident answers are often wrong, rely on your tracked accuracy until your confidence becomes more reliable.
Does negative marking apply the same way to every question type in an exam?
Not always. For example, CAT applies negative marking only to MCQs, while TITA (Type in the Answer) questions don’t have negative marking.
