Check both your theory and practical scores
KIIT requires a minimum of 50% separately for courses with both theory and practical components. Scoring well overall doesn’t help if one specific component falls below 50%. If your CGPA is lower than expected, check your individual theory and practical marks on your grade card. It is common to have a failed practical behind a decent theory score.

Suppose your CGPA is 7.0 after 66 credits, and you score an SGPA of 5.2 in the next 22-credit semester.
New CGPA = (7.0 × 66 + 5.2 × 22) ÷ 88 = 6.55
One bad semester drops your CGPA from 7.0 to 6.55. Identify the weak subjects from this semester and improve them in the next one. Recovering your CGPA is easier in the early semesters. As you complete more credits, improving your CGPA becomes harder.
KIIT’s grading isn’t purely on a curve
KIIT mainly follows an absolute grading system in which marks are converted into fixed grade bands. Some moderation may happen, but it isn’t the main factor for a lower CGPA. If your score is lower, review your preparation and marks. Don’t assume that the grading curve is the reason first.

What it takes to reach 7.5
Suppose your CGPA is 7.3 after 88 credits. The final semester carries 22 credits. To graduate with a 7.5 CGPA, you’ll need an SGPA of about 8.3 in your final semester. It’s a challenging target, but it’s realistic if you’re already scoring around this range.
Most affiliating universities conduct placements separately through their own institutions. But KIIT manages placements through a centralised Training and Placement (T&P) Cell. The T&P Cell announces placement eligibility and CGPA cutoffs each season. The cutoff and eligibility requirements depend every year on the companies visiting. Always check the current season’s eligibility criteria directly rather than relying on previous years’ cutoffs.
Higher studies and the international student body

The backlog rule that decides more than your CGPA
Most students think backlogs only affect their CGPA. At KIIT, they can also decide whether you’re promoted to the next academic year.
KIIT has a strict promotion rule. If you have backlogs in more than 50% of the courses from your immediately preceding academic year (both semesters combined), you won’t be promoted to the next year. You’ll be treated as a Year-Back case. You may need to take re-admission according to university rules. This is different from a low CGPA. A low CGPA can improve over future semesters, but a Year-Back delays your degree by an entire academic year.
The practical takeaway: if you have multiple backlogs, don’t just track your CGPA. Count your actual backlog subjects against your total subjects for that academic year. This helps you understand how close you are to the 50% backlog limit.
How backlog registration actually works
You can clear the backlog by registering for it alongside your regular subjects in the next available exam cycle. You need to pay some fees for the backlog registration process. The fee is non-transferable and non-refundable.
There are two important rules:
You must clear backlogs in order. Registration starts from your lowest pending academic year. You cannot skip an earlier backlog to register for a later one.
You can register for up to 5 backlog subjects in a single semester along with your regular subjects. If you have more than 5 backlogs, the remaining subjects will carry forward to a later semester.
If you have backlogs from different years, plan them according to the rule that the earliest pending year comes first. The university follows this order, so planning can help you avoid delays.
Grade improvement: what it actually offers and what it doesn’t
If you’ve passed a subject but want a better grade, KIIT allows a grade improvement attempt. However, there are a few important conditions you should know first.
You’re only eligible if you have fewer than 3 backlog theory papers. If you are eligible, you can attempt improvement for up to 3 theory papers in total (including backlog papers). You have to register for the backlog papers first and the improvement papers second. The improvement attempt is available only in your immediate next end-of-semester examination. You cannot postpone it to a later semester.
The good news: If your improvement attempt doesn’t increase your grade, your original grade remains unchanged. Since this opportunity is available only once, it’s best to decide early.
Your final grade isn’t decided by the end-of-semester exam alone
Your final grade depends on both your mid-semester and end-semester performance. KIIT also sets a minimum qualifying score for the mid-semester exam. If you don’t meet it, you may get a chance to retake the mid-semester assessment.
If two mid-semester attempts are made for a subject, the better score is usually used to determine your final grade. This means a weak mid-semester score isn’t always final. You may improve your score by retaking the exam. At the same time, treating mid-semester exams as “just practice” is a mistake. They play an important role in your final grade, so prepare for them just as seriously as you prepare for your final semester exams.

I didn’t clear the minimum score in my mid-semester exam. Does that mean I fail the course?
Not necessarily. KIIT allow a mid-semester retake if you don’t meet the minimum score on your first attempt. If two attempts are held, the better score is usually considered for your final grade. The retake rules vary by subject, so confirm the process with your department.
How long does KIIT keep my answer scripts if I want to request a review later?
Digitized answer scripts are usually kept for 6 months after results are published. And non-digitized scripts are retained for 2 years before being disposed of. If you plan to request a script review, apply within the retention period. Check with your examination office for the latest process and any applicable fees.
