How your CGPA is actually built

IPU uses a credit-weighted average to calculate CGPA, just like most Indian universities. But there are a few university-specific rules that explain why your final CGPA may differ from what you expect. IPU uses the following grade:

Letter Grade Grade Point
O 10
A+ 9
A 8
B+ 7
B 6
C 5
P (Minimum Pass) 4
F 0

For each semester, your SGPA is calculated by multiplying the grade point of every subject by its credit hours. Next, add these values together and divide by the total semester credits to get your SGPA. Your CGPA is then calculated using the same credit-weighted method across all completed semesters.

But many students overlook the internal assessment. Sometimes it is listed as Teachers’ Continuous Evaluation on the results portal. These internal marks are included in your final grade before the end-of-semester exam result is finalised. It is usually visible on the portal ahead of the final result. If your semester grade is lower than expected, check your internal assessment marks first. Sometimes lower internal assessment marks are the reason your final CGPA is lower than expected.

If you think there’s a mistake in your result

IPU allows students to apply for rechecking or revaluation after results are declared. You can apply for a single subject or multiple subjects in the same application. The application window is open for a short time after the results are declared. If you want to apply, then contact the exam section early. Don’t delay it further.

Revaluation doesn’t guarantee higher marks. Answer scripts are checked against the official marking scheme. Your marks change only where an actual error is found, such as an unevaluated answer, a totalling error, or a mismatch against the scheme. But thinking that you deserved more marks is rarely enough to change the result.

If you want to review your evaluated answer script before applying, IPU also allows students to request certified copies or inspection of answer sheets. Before results are announced, check your college’s examination branch or the university’s official exam portal for the latest fees, application process, and deadlines. Knowing the process in advance helps you act quickly if you need revaluation.

Why does “a good CGPA” mean different things depending on your program

A good CGPA isn’t the same for every IPU student. IPU offers engineering, law, management, medicine, nursing, and other professional programs within the same university. A good CGPA depends on your career path. If your career goal requires a CGPA of 7.5, then 7.5 is a good CGPA for you.

For engineering and management students, CGPA plays a key role in placement eligibility and higher studies. A higher CGPA usually opens more placement opportunities. The personalised guidance above focuses on these opportunities.

For BA LLB students, there is another factor to consider. Many State Judicial Services (PCS-J) examinations require a minimum aggregate percentage and the eligibility criteria. The requirements vary by state and exam cycle. If becoming a civil judge is your goal, check your state’s latest eligibility notification before your final year. These requirements are separate from IPU’s own graduation rules.

For BSc Nursing, BPT, and other professional programs, some licensing or registration bodies also set minimum aggregate requirements. These are separate from your university’s own passing criteria.

A good CGPA at IPU is not enough for every career path. Many jobs, entrance exams, and professional bodies also have their own eligibility requirements. Find out the requirements for your field as early as possible. Don’t assume a good CGPA will automatically meet every career or licensing requirement.

Questions students actually run into

Does my IPU marksheet show percentage directly, or only CGPA?

Most IPU marksheets show your SGPA for each semester and your final CGPA. Some colleges also print the percentage, while others do not. If your marksheet doesn’t have a percentage, calculate it using the official conversion formula for your admission batch.

I transferred colleges within IPU or entered through lateral entry. How does my earlier academic record affect my CGPA?

Lateral entry: Your IPU CGPA usually starts from the semester you join IPU. Marks from your diploma or previous qualification are generally not added.

Transfer within IPU: Your CGPA normally continues with your existing academic record because both colleges follow the same grading system.

If your case is different, confirm the rules with your college’s academic office.

How much do internal assessment marks actually affect my final CGPA?

Internal assessment (Teachers’ Continuous Evaluation) is included in the final grade for most courses. Its weightage varies by course and program. These marks are usually available before the final result. So, checking them early helps you estimate your semester performance.

I want to apply for revaluation. What should I do first?

First, check the application dates, fee, and process in the examination section. Revaluation deadlines are short. If you’re unsure whether to apply, request a certified copy or inspection of your answer sheet first. Reviewing your script can help you decide whether revaluation is necessary.

My BA LLB CGPA clears IPU’s own passing requirements. Is that enough for the judiciary exam eligibility?

Not always. Passing IPU’s graduation requirements does not automatically make you eligible for judiciary exams. Many State Judicial Services (PCS-J) exams have their own minimum percentage requirements. But it varies by the states. Always check the latest eligibility criteria for the state where you plan to apply.

Important: Placement cutoffs, admission requirements, scholarship rules, and hiring policies may change over time. Use this guide as a starting point, but always verify the latest information on the official website before applying or making any academic, admission, scholarship, or career-related decision.
